L-Phenylalanine is one of the 20 amino acids. It is an essential amino acid. It contains an aromatic side chain, which contributes to ultraviolet absorbance and fluorescence properties.
L-Phenylalanine is used in the manufacture of food and drink products and sold as a nutritional supplement for its reputed analgesic and antidepressant effects. It is a direct precursor to the neuromodulator phenylethylamine, a commonly used dietary supplement.
Soluble in water, hydrochloric acid (50 mg/ml-clear, colorless solution), aqueous (20 mg/ml-clear, colorless solution; powder may need to be ground slightly with a mortar and pestle before solubilization); very slighly soluble in methanol and ethanol.
